2021 Mazda CX-5 vs 2021 Kia Sportage: Zoom-Zoom is standard in the CX-5

The compact SUV segment is full of exciting options for all types of consumers, regardless of their preferences. One option is the 2021 Mazda CX-5, which combines truly sporty handling with elegant style and cutting-edge technologies. If we want an SUV that's fun to drive, the Mazda CX-5 is usually on the list of models to go for. However, the Kia Sportage can also claim a spot on the list.

While it is true that the Kia Sportage is a dynamic SUV like the Mazda CX-5, the comparison is thoroughly to the advantage of the Mazda when we take a look at the efficiency of the two SUVs. There, the 2021 Mazda CX-5 really has the advantage.

Offered out of the gate with a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine producing 187 horsepower and 186 lb-ft of torque, the CX-5's four-cylinder engine is more powerful than the majority of its rivals including the 2.4-liter engine of the Kia Sportage. The latter offers 181 horsepower and 175 lb-ft of torque.

Despite the difference in power between the two models, the 2021 Mazda CX-5 offers better fuel economy with an average fuel consumption rating of 9.8 liters per 100 kilometers in the city and 7.9 liters per 100 kilometers on the highway. The Kia Sportage averages 10.8 liters per 100 kilometers in the city and 9.1 liters per 100 kilometers on the highway.

It's no surprise, then, that the Kia Sportage is less popular than the Mazda CX-5 in terms of sales. The latter is both more powerful and more fuel efficient.

Even when looking at higher performance powertrains, the 2021 Mazda CX-5 has the advantage. It offers a four-cylinder turbo engine in its Signature livery. The latter delivers 250 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque while consuming an average of just 10.8 liters per 100 kilometers in the city and 8.7 liters per 100 kilometers on the highway. That means the that CX-5’s turbo trumps the Kia Sportage’s 2.0-litre option with 237 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque in terms of power, but also in terms of efficiency.
